Overview – Broadband Wireless Access

A. WiMAX

Wireless China looks into IEEE 802.16, a new and promising wireless standard also known as WiMAX. With its extended range and capability to upload data at high speed, WiMAX not only offers the first mile/last mile connection in wireless metro area networks but is optimized for broadband operation in the WAN as well. For carriers, Wi-Fi operators and WAN mobile network operators, WiMAX provides a cost effective backhaul solution. In underserved markets and residential markets, WiMAX may become the most logical choice to provide connectivity and extend DSL or cable modem service. This track provides audience with an insight into WiMAX and the impact it brings to your business. By attending, you will have the knowledge to better position yourself for full the opportunities and prepare for the challenges ahead.

Hear what WiMAX means to the Wi-Fi and wireless operators, what’s the market like for WiMAX in China, how does this new IEEE 802.16 standard compare with other existing wireless broadband solutions? Audiences will also learn about the relationship between Wi-Fi and WiMAX, evolution of WiMAX from fixed line to mobile, interoperability issues for WiMAX, applications for WiMAX, WiMAX pricing strategies, plus much more. Other topics for discussion include:

  • Overview of WiMAX and the market prospects in China

  • Impact, inter-relationship and integration with Wi-Fi, DSL and cable

  • What’s involved in provisioning wireless broadband through WiMAX

  • Business considerations and technical requirements for deploying WiMAX

  • Opportunity or threat to LMDS and MMDS license holders/operators?

  • Opportunities and challenges for wireless and wireline operators

  • Perspective from chip manufacturers

  • Who’s the early adopters and foreseeable users for WiMAX in China

  • Developing business models, marketing strategies, service bundling and pricing plans for WiMAX services

B. LMDS/MMDS/FSO & Proprietary Standards

As demand for high speed Internet connection surges, addressing the lack of capacity in the access network has quickly climbed the list of priorities for Chinese operators. In certain situations, point to multipoint microwave technologies such as local multipoint distribution services, multichannel multipoint distribution services, free space optics along with proprietary wireless standards is poised as the best solution to deliver revenue enhancing high bandwidth services for the last mile. LMDS, MMDS, FSOs and proprietary standards have also play a key role in cutting backhaul costs down when 3G networks are deployed.

This segment of the conference covers the following aspects of LMDS/MMDS/FSO & Proprietary Standards: planning and construction; licensing process; deployment and operation; business, alliances, financing, investment returns; technology selection and initial system build out; and other issues that are of interest to operators and new license holders. By attending you’ll also be brought up to speed on the latest technological developments, how to harness LMDS, MMDS, FSO and other related technologies to deliver profitable services, securing more subscribers with higher margin wireless access and services, business case and deployment experiences of operators elsewhere in the world, what advantages and key benefits can be expected and overcoming the challenges and limitations posed by LMDS/MMDS/FSO and proprietary standards and how to achieve QoS, requirements to delivering mission critical applications and business services, integration with 3G networks, migration strategy and future proofing.

Attendees who are shaping a successful future for fixed wireless broadband services nationwide will find this track to be of value. This includes providers of broadband communication services, wireless broadband operators, fixed and wireless telecom operations, mobile operators, LMDS licensees, MMDS carriers, CATVs, carriers, access providers, research institutions, contractors, systems integrators, consultants, BWA platform providers, BWA solution providers, BWA component providers, CASPs, regulators from MII Radio Administration Bureau, MII Telecom Administration, suppliers, investors, analysts and the media.
