T122 Breakout Session
April 18, 1405 – 1440
Topic: “EPON, GPON, and the Triple Play CPE”
Speaker: Mr. Kevin Poon, Regional Manager, PMC-Sierra
Abstract
FTTH is finally being deployed in large volume, taking full advantage of the
inherent cost benefit of PON topologies. IEEE EPON, the first PON standard to be
deployed in millions, is gaining momentum in Asia, leveraging the cost benefits
and maturity that come with volume deployments in Japan and Korea. With
interoperable systems adhering to China-local detailed EPON specifications,
China is likely to be next to deploy EPON in volume. In the same time, ITU GPON,
currently in trial stages, gets carrier endorsement for future deployments in
North America and Europe.
This presentation
will present the concept of Triple Play Service over both EPON and GPON, and
specifically the benefits such services gain from China’s EPON specifications.
Based on field experience gained through deployment of millions of ONUs, it will
discuss the requirements from both EPON and GPON CPEs, in order to support
triple-play services in real deployment scenarios, in a scalable and
future-proof way. We will take a further step to introduce the concept of the
fiber-access gateway, a line-rate router, which is adapted to both EPON and GPON
networks. This presentation will explain the importance of the fiber access CPEs
for triple-play services and for the digital home, and the value of the fiber
access gateway.
