Topic: “GPON – More than Just a Faster PON for IPTV”
Speaker: Mr. Dan Parsons, Director of Marketing, BroadLight
Abstract
PON has proven to be the lowest cost FTTH network for Triple Play services. For
video, telcos have realized the need to provide IPTV as opposed to CATV overlay
on their PON not only for a richer and more competitive video offering but also
for driving down costs. However, high-speed services such as IPTV require more
than just more bandwidth to solve the QoS sensitivities cost effectively. This
talk will review the intrinsic QoS mechanisms in GPON that make it standout as
the best PON technology for QoS sensitive applications like IPTV, VoIP and
gaming. It will also provide an update on the state of the PON industry as well
as a PON technology cost comparison based on transport requirements to support
High Definition (HD) and multiple Standard Definition (SD) IPTV streams.
